Compatibility with D2L

I have had no problem using Testgen to generate web-based quizzes that can be directly imported into Blackboard, but how do I generate a quiz into a file format that can be directly imported into Desire2Learn?

TestGen Forums:

TestGen does not currently have a direct export of tests to D2L format, but we have added this option to the *wish list* for TestGen 8.0. One workaround that some people are using is to export a TestGen test to QTI format, then use Respondus to convert the QTI export into a D2L package. If you have access to Respondus, you might want to give it a try.  C.S.

Thank you for the quick response - I'll give this a try.

Suppose I don't have access to Respondus?

Hi Chris -- Other than the Respondus workaround, there is currently no way to export to D2L from TestGen.

You can upload the blackboard zip file directly into D2L. Once you download the blackboard zip file from the instructor resource center enter your course Go to Edit course and choose the import/export . you can browse to the file and select question library and all the question are there. Then just pick and choose questions you want on the quiz .

If you create your own quiz in Test gen then cllick on file choose export and choose to blackboard 6.0-7.0. Once you have a blackboard zip file that can be uploaded to D2L.

Be nice if it worked, I am using Respondus 4, and have had no luck.
Frankly, I am telling instructors to avoid texts with TestGen like the plague

How do you do this? The QTI format Testgen exports has a separate xml file for each question. Respondus seems to want a single file for all the questions.

I think the Blackboard 6 export might work. I don't have direct experience with this; however, I did find specific instructions on Pearson's site. I've included the url and the steps they mentioned for your convenience. Could you give it a try and report back your findings?

Creating a Desire2Learn file using a Blackboard test file.

  1. Download the Blackboard test file for the text through the Instructor Resource Center
  2. Open the zip file and view the contents
  3. Click on imsmanifest.xml
  4. Hold the control key and click on the test contents that you would like to upload into D2L
  • To see what chapter and types of questions the file contains right click on the individual file and select properties
  • Note: If you select all the files at once they will not be broken down by chapter when you upload them
  • Suggestion: select the questions according to chapter so that they are arranged by chapter when you upload them into D2L
  • Right click on the selected items
  • From the menu that appears click on extract to desktop
  • Go to your desktop
  • Select the folder for the materials you extracted in step 6
  • Right click on the folder
  • Select “Stuff-it’ or your zip program name
  • Select compress with zip
  • Select the same destination ( the zip file will be put directly on your desktop)
  • Follow directions on how to upload test bank into D2L
