  2. Open a browser and go to http://support.pearsoncmg.com/testgen/tgPluginTest.htm (this page) to see if the box now appears correctly.

Don't see the test box and are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer (IE) See "Configure IE browser settings".
Don't see headings in the test box See "Cannot view headings".
Don't see the symbols in the test box See "Cannot view corresponding symbols".
After repeatedly opening and viewing multiple TestGen tests (from the CourseCompass gradebook, for example) you see a broken icon in the test box and/or you receive the following error message: "Memory block being deleted is already empty".
Note Condition applies for those using a Macintosh computer with a Netscape browser.
See "Adjust Macintosh memory settings".

Configure IE browser settings

If you are using Internet Explorer, you may have to modify your browser settings to allow cookies (information that a website stores on your hard disk so that it can remember something about you at a later time).

To configure Internet Explorer browser settings:

  1. Select Internet Options from the Internet Explorer Tools menu.
  2. On the Security tab, select Custom Level. Select Enable under Run ActiveX controls and Plug-ins.
  3. On the Advanced tab, select Enable third-party browser extensions under Browsing.
  4. On the Privacy tab, move the slider to Low.

Note If you do not have a slider on the Privacy tab, select the Advanced button. Then, select Override automatic cookie handling. Select Accept under First party cookiesand Third-party cookies. Select Always allow session cookies, then click OK.

Cannot view headings

  1. Locate your browser's Plugins folder and see if it contains the TestGen Plug-in files listed below. For Windows users, the Plugins folder is typically located at C:\Program Files\<browser_name>\Plugins.

    TestGen Plug-in files:
     Windows  Macintosh
     nptgeqplugin.dll
     nptgeqplugin.dat
     nptgeqhelp.html
     tgeqa.ttf
     tgeqas.ttf
     tgeqab.ttf
     tgeqabi.ttf
     tgeqai.ttf
     tgeqasi.ttf
     tgeqm.ttf
     tgeqs.ttf
     nptgeqplugin
     nptgeqplugin.dat
     nptgeqhelp.html
     tgeqa.suit
     tgeqas.suit
     tgeqab.suit
     tgeqabi.suit
     tgeqai.suit
     tgeqasi.suit
     tgeqm.suit
     tgeqs.suit

Important   If you have more than one browser or different versions of the same browser installed on your computer, be sure you install the TestGen Plug-in to the Plugins folder for the browser you will be using to view the Test Page.

  2. If all the necessary files are listed in the Plugins folder (of the browser you are using), and you still do not see the headings in the box above, then reinstall the TestGen Plug-in.

Cannot view corresponding symbols

If you see the correct headings and text in the box above, but the three symbol characters in the Font Tests section do not match their description, ensure that the .ttf files (Windows) or the .suit files (Macintosh) exist in your computer's Fonts folder. You can see a list of these fonts in the TestGen Plug-in files table.

Note   The TestGen installation process installs two copies of TestGen fonts on your computer, one in the browser's Plugins folder, and one in the Fonts folder.

Adjust Macintosh memory settings

If you are using a Macintosh computer with Netscape and receive a memory error, you need to manually adjust the memory settings for your operating system to prevent insufficient memory errors when using the browser.

To adjust the memory settings:
  1. Quit your browser.
  2. Locate the application on your hard disk. From the File menu, choose Find and enter the name of the application (Netscape, for example).
  3. Click once on the application icon for your browser to select it.
  4. From the File menu, choose Get Info then Memory.
  5. In the Memory Requirements section, you will see settings for:
  6. Increase the Preferred memory size by 25-30%.

The Preferred size specifies the amount of memory your browser sets aside for its use. Depending on the amount of RAM on your computer, you may need to increase the size by more than 25-30%. Contact your local IT person if you need assistance increasing the memory size.

Note To prevent your browser from locking up or crashing, in addition to increasing the Preferred memory size, you should also quit any other applications that you have open while using your browser.

Note If you have an earlier version of the TestGen Plug-in installed on your computer, you may see additional files with an extension of .ttf or .suit in the Plugins folder. These files are TestGen font files that were used by previous versions of the program—do not delete them.

  • The TestGen Plug-in installation also installs the four font files (*.otf files) in the Fonts folder for your operating system. Check to see if these files were installed.
  • If any of these files are missing, re-install the TestGen Plug-in. Check the files again.
